This module explores how the concept of gender empowerment has evolved from its origins to its current use within institutional and policy frameworks. It examines the main tools and indicators used to measure empowerment , such as the Gender Equality Index, and discusses their potential and limitations in capturing lived realities. Students will analyse European strategies and policies on gender equality across different domains, including political participation, labor market, education, and gender-based violence. The module also investigates the role of civil society organizations (CSOs) and the tensions they face between funding requirements, organizational stability, and their grassroots missions. Finally, students will interpret comparative data on gender attitudes in Europe to understand how contextual factors influence public support for gender equality and empowerment.

This module focuses on the diverse processes through which migrant women experience and negotiate empowerment in everyday life. Through case studies and theoretical reflections, students will explore the connections between agency, self-confidence, and decision-making, as well as the role of economic autonomy in fostering empowerment. The module also addresses the importance of education, language, and social belonging as key dimensions of inclusion, paying special attention to the challenges faced by young migrant women and transnational mothers. This module invites students to rethink empowerment as a dynamic, relational, and context-dependent process.

This module explores how empowerment takes shape in practice through the work of civil society organizations across Europe. It introduces transformative, intersectional, and community-based methodologies that promote gender equality and inclusion. Students will examine how educational and cultural initiatives challenge structural violence, racism, and privilege within institutions and everyday contexts. Through case studies students will discover how CSOs foster agency, healing, and participation among migrant and migrantised women. The module highlights empowerment as a collective process rooted in creativity, solidarity, and social justice.

This module focuses on methodological approaches to studying and fostering gender empowerment. Through empirical examples, students will learn how Photo Voice and other participatory methods make women’s experiences visible and politically relevant. The module also discusses critical feminist and intersectional methodologies that advocate for situated knowledge. It further explores how empowerment can be assessed through participatory and reflective evaluation, focusing on outcomes and transformative impact rather than quantitative measures. Students will explore how creative and arts-based methods can enhance representation and participation, while reflecting on the ethical and political dimensions of researching empowerment.

This module explores how technology and digital co-creation can support gender empowerment and social inclusion. It introduces Quwa, a collaborative platform designed to connect and strengthen civil society organizations across Europe. Students will learn how participatory design, facilitation, and agile methodologies enable inclusive and human-centered innovation. The module also addresses critical questions about technological bias, responsibility, and the ethics of artificial intelligence. Through real-world examples, participants will analyse the opportunities and challenges that CSOs face in adopting digital tools, and how co-creation processes can build stronger, fairer, and more sustainable digital ecosystems for social change.
