Graduates receive a standard University of Leeds certificate. It is identical to the certificate awarded for on-campus study and does not mention Coursera.
This degree prepares students for data science and statistics roles across a wide range of sectors, including healthcare, business, retail, government, and environmental science. It develops the ability to assess data quality, choose appropriate methods of analysis, and support decision-making with statistical and data science expertise.
The MSc Data Science (Statistics) leads to a recognised UK degree qualification. It does not currently hold additional professional accreditation.
The programme is delivered fully online through Coursera and is structured as 12 courses, each worth 15 credits and designed to run in an 8-week block. Learning combines live webinars or tutorials, online content, discussion boards, and self-directed study. Students typically take one course at a time. The programme can be completed in about 24 months, balancing study with other commitments. The expected study load is around 20 hours per week per course.
Yes. Students are invited to attend in-person graduation ceremonies on campus, and an online celebration option is also available.
Students can contact tutors by email and receive asynchronous support. Once fully registered, online students also have access to the University of Leeds library services and online resources, including journals, ebooks, databases, and search tools. Students can interact with peers through forums and live sessions, and additional professional networking and careers information is available through the University of Leeds career services website.
Once fully registered, you will have the same access to on-campus facilities as an on-campus student such as access to all library services and online facilities, including the University of Leeds Library's vast range of online resources such as journal articles, electronic books, databases, and search tools. Additionally, online materials are available 24/7 and enquiries will be responded to within 24 hours, Monday-Friday, 09.00-17.00 UK time.
The curriculum combines core data science study with a stronger statistical emphasis, including areas such as programming, machine learning, data ethics, data management, statistical modelling, Bayesian statistics, statistical computing, and real-world project work. The Leeds Institute for Data Analytics supports the programme by delivering the Project Skills module and supporting students in the Project module.
Total tuition is listed at £15,000, with no application fee and pay-as-you-go tuition. Funding options include employer tuition reimbursement, UK student finance through the Student Loan Company, and additional resources for international students as the main funding routes currently promoted.
The programme offers both direct entry and a performance-based admissions route. For the performance-based pathway, applicants who do not meet the standard entry qualifications may qualify if they have either a third-class BSc or BEng honours degree, or three years of relevant professional work experience. To progress through this route, learners must complete the first two courses with a minimum 50% weighted average.
