What is talent transformation?

Talent transformation is the process of upskilling your current workforce to ensure you have talent agility for the future, while fostering a learning culture within your organization.

This means providing opportunities for your staff to learn new skills so they're ready to tackle new technology, handle new responsibilities, and become more innovative and productive, all of which can benefit your company. It also means allowing your employees to grow within your organization, which creates a mutually beneficial relationship.

Upskilling is the process of learning new skills that help an employee succeed at your company and in their career. The more relevant skills a person has, the more valuable they can be to your organization.

A learning culture occurs when your company's leaders and managers prioritize talent development and inspire their workforce to participate in continuous learning opportunities. Education, knowledge, and learning new skills are all valued and rewarded.

Talent agility simply means that your staff is well-prepared to respond to anything that comes their way, whether it's adopting new technology, producing a new product, or navigating the advancements in artificial intelligence and automation that are transforming the way they work. They have the human and technical skills, as well as the confidence that comes from honing them, to adapt as necessary.

Talent transformation vs. talent training

Talent transformation and talent training are both part of talent management, but they differ in some ways. Talent training refers to training activities that employees might participate in, such as seminars, workshops, and lectures. Talent transformation encompasses those activities, but it might also include coaching, mentoring, new on-the-job experiences, and working with employees to help them discover their goals and untapped talents.

How does talent transformation benefit your company?

Talent transformation benefits employees who want to advance their careers, and it's also beneficial for your organization in many ways. For example, offering talent development programs can help your company attract high-quality employees and reduce your turnover. Some other benefits might include:

  • Closing the skills gap that may exist within your workforce

  • Increasing productivity among your employees

  • Improving talent mobility within your organization

  • Growing employee engagement

  • Standardizing employee training and education for future hires

  • Building confidence in your employees

  • Identifying and fostering untapped talent

  • Remaining competitive in your industry

  • Preparing your organization for the future

Why talent transformation helps you attract and retain employees

One of the most important reasons companies implement talent transformation programs is that they help attract high-quality employees and retain current employees. Recent research indicates that 72 percent of employers report difficulty finding talent with the requisite skills [1]. While a skills gap is partially responsible for that, another factor is employees' desire for more from their employers.

Employees want to work for places that prioritize factors like:

  • Access to learning and development opportunities

  • Skills development

  • Transfer in leadership

  • Fostering career growth

  • Hybrid working environments

  • Emphasis on employee well-being

  • Personalized approaches to talent transformation

  • Building a multi-generational workforce

What industries can benefit from talent transformation?

All industries can benefit from talent transformation, especially those that work with technology or require digital talent. The need for workers with strong cybersecurity skills, for example, is on the rise, largely due to the rise in cyber attacks in recent years. According to a 2025 survey of 1,500 tech executives and IT and business professionals, 95 percent of the executives surveyed highlight learning culture as essential; however, 95 percent of IT and business professionals indicate they require additional backing to strengthen their tech capabilities [2], indicating leadership's need to translate their intentions into action.

The manufacturing industry is another place where the need for talent transformation is strong, as companies accelerate investment in automation and AI. Despite record technology spending, manufacturers are finding it increasingly challenging to hire workers with the skills needed to implement and operate these systems, creating a widening capability gap. Research from Revalize indicates that while companies continue to invest in advanced technologies, many are beginning to recognize that their workforce may not yet be prepared to keep pace with these changes [3].

Advances in technology also affect the availability of talent in the health care industry. As companies merge and medicine advances, the need for agile talent is prevalent.

How to start a talent transformation development program

To implement talent transformation and development in your workplace, you must have the support of leadership and stakeholders, which includes your employees. Define your organization's goals and the skills needed to meet them, so you can create a program that meets those needs.

Talk to your employees about their personal strengths and needs as well as their career goals. You can identify where your organization's needs and your employees' needs overlap and start there. Also, offer personalized programs for individuals or small groups, like coaching and mentoring. Be transparent about what you're doing and remove any barriers your workers may face.

Be sure to reward and recognize employees who participate in talent training and development programs. Finally, evaluate the program's outcomes to determine whether they align with your goals and make adjustments as necessary.

How firms support talent transformation during technology adoption

You can support talent transformation during technology adoption by helping your employees and teams overcome the barriers that typically slow down adoption. These challenges include limited system integration, uncertainty about the efficacy of AI-enabled talent technologies, and gaps in understanding of how these technologies support day‑to‑day processes. You can respond through targeted interventions, such as:

  • System integration work: Investing in interfaces and middleware to ensure AI tools connect with existing platforms

  • Capability‑building: Providing training, workshops, and expert‑led sessions to strengthen understanding and demonstrate the efficacy of the new technology

  • Knowledge‑sharing: Creating pilot programs so employees can test AI tools before incorporating them throughout your organization

  • Process clarity: Clearly defining talent acquisition procedures and workflows to enable AI tools to facilitate a more strategic, skills-focused hiring approach

  • AI roadmap development: Setting goals, metrics, and safeguards to guide responsible adoption
